The National Geographic Institute has detected since Sunday afternoon six small seismic movements with epicenter in the municipality of Agaete (Gran Canaria)The most intense reached a magnitude of 2,2 and was slightly perceived by residents of the area.
According to the agency's records, the series has been shallow, with hypocenters located between 4 and 9 kilometers. No material or personal damage has been reported and the feeling reported by the population is limited to a intensity II–III on the scale of effects, mainly in Agaete and Los Llanos.
Chronology of the tremors in Agaete

The activity started on Sunday afternoon with two consecutive earthquakes: one at 18:54 of magnitude 1,7 and another at 18:58 of magnitude 1,2, separated by just four minutes and without significant effects.
Already in the early hours of Monday the main event was recorded, at 04:08, with magnitude 2,2 and the focus was about 4 kilometers deep. This tremor was felt weakly and placed the observed intensity between II and III, in keeping with a slight movement.
Later, the IGN located two additional earthquakes at 04:50 and 04:59 hrs., both of magnitude 0,9 and with estimated depths between 6 and 9 kilometers, with no record of incidents.
With these records, the balance sheet for the period includes six earthquakes in the Agaete area, according to the IGN calculations, all of them of low magnitude and characteristics consistent with the usual seismicity in the area.
Seismic activity between Gran Canaria and Tenerife
In parallel, the stations have detected in the last 24 hours a half a dozen minor earthquakes off the eastern coast of Tenerife, especially at the height of Fasnia and Arico, with magnitudes between 1,1 and 2,3.
In recent days, movements have also been recorded in the stretch of sea that separates both islands, with magnitudes between 1,6 and 3,4This last earthquake of 3,4, with hypocenter around 29 kilometers, was noticed in nearby towns, without causing any damage.
What scientific organizations say
The regional management of the IGN emphasizes that the series shows no signs of magmatic intrusion as those observed in historical episodes of the archipelago. It is an activity small, continuous and low intensity, which maintains active surveillance in case any changes occur.
The Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands points out that the seismic activity of the week has been slightly above average, but remains within the parameters of tectonic normality of the archipelago and does not indicate any changes in volcanic activity in either Tenerife or Gran Canaria.
For context reference, Involcan data place the weekly average at around 26,8 earthquakes in Tenerife, 1,1 in Gran Canaria y 8,1 on the channel between the two islands. In the same time window, small events have been documented off the coast of Las eras (Tenerife), with magnitudes of up to 2,0 and depths of 15–25km, and earthquakes of 2,8 and 2,7 in the channel at about 23–26km.
Citizen perception and recommendations
An intensity II–III indicates that the tremor may be felt lightly by the population, with no damage to structures or disruptions to daily life. In cases like Agaete, the expected effects are soft and punctual vibrations, compatible with the level of magnitude observed.
The authorities recommend get information from official sources (IGN, Involcan and Civil Protection), follow any indication if there is one and avoid the spread of rumors or unverified messagesIn the event of any significant changes, the agencies will update their data and notices.
The Agaete episode is defined by six low-magnitude earthquakes, with a maximum of 2,2, shallow outbreaks and a weak perception by the public. It coincides with a slight regional rebound, but the technical assessment is clear: no signs of magmatic intrusion and with active monitoring by scientific bodies.
