Giordano Bruno

In ancient times, there were people who didn't believe in evolution or the discovery of certain things. What was already established and believed to be true couldn't be changed overnight simply because someone new said so. This is what happened to Giordano Bruno for contradicting the prevailing view that the Earth was not the center of the universe.

In this article we are going to explain to you what happened to Giordano Bruno and what his exploits were.

Who was Giordano Bruno?

Bruno's life problems

He was a man who dedicated most of his life to philosophy and theology. He was very religious and also wrote poetry and plays. He was born in 1548 in Nola, Naples. He was sentenced to death by the Holy Inquisition for a rebellious act against the Church, asserting that the Earth was not the center of the Universe.

As we know today, our planet belongs to the Solar System , made up of eight other planets that orbit the Sun. In 1548, the technology to determine our position in the Universe was nonexistent. As has always been the case with humankind, we were prone to egocentrism, and, of course, in this instance, we believed ourselves to be the center of everything. Giordano Bruno was sentenced to death, and a few days before his execution, Pope Clement VIII gave him the opportunity to renounce his ideas and repent.

The story goes that Bruno did not renounce his beliefs even by burning at the stake. He was firm to his ideals until the end. Now it can be concluded that a man, whose discovery was advanced for his time, was cruelly murdered by human self-centeredness and the church.

His troubles began when he dared to read the forbidden texts of the Dutch philosopher Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam. This occurred in 1575, and from that moment on, Bruno was targeted. This was only the beginning of his problems. His beliefs, from a very young age, were a threat to the Church, as he had his own way of understanding theology. The more religious members of the community were uneasy upon hearing what Bruno had to say about the Earth, despite also being a religious person.

Problems in life

The inquisition and Bruno

Given his diverse beliefs for his age (which has since been proven true), it is said that Giordano was never accepted by the religious establishment. He was ordained a priest and accused of heresy. As a result, he had to leave the Order and was excommunicated. Later, he converted to Calvinism, although his critical views led to his swift imprisonment.

Not only was Bruno persecuted by the Inquisition for having ideals or beliefs that did not agree with religion, but various intellectuals were cruelly attacked by the same ones who tried to preach the word of God and bring peace to the world.

Throughout his life, he was only truly happy and found some peace during the years he spent in London, Paris, and Oxford . It was only there that he was able to fully develop his abilities, gaining renown as the author of several theological works and exploring ideas that would later be debated, such as Nicolaus Copernicus's heliocentric theory . These theories were also under constant threat from the Inquisition, which was supported by Galileo Galilei.

Ideology ahead of its time

Theory that the Earth is not the center of the Universe

And indeed, some people have been far ahead of their time. A professor in the Physics Department at the State University of São Paulo (UNESP) named Rodolfo Langhi asserted that Bruno knew and supported the idea that the Sun was the center of the Universe. Furthermore, he had developed several theories based on what he had learned. He claimed that the Universe was infinite and did not have a single center as we know it. In other words, there were other inhabited worlds like Earth, and each group of planets revolved around its own center.

As early as 1575, Bruno believed that the Universe contained many other planets like Earth and many other giant stars like the Sun. He asserted that there were more planets beyond Saturn orbiting the Sun. Later, after the discoveries of Uranus , Neptune , and Pluto in 1871, 1846, and 1930, respectively, he was proven right.

Bruno's problem with society was that he didn't base his beliefs on scientific data and evidence. On the contrary, he relied on religious beliefs, and this increasingly led to problems for him, eventually placing him in the crosshairs of the Inquisition. After being accused of heresy, he had to leave Paris in 1586. He wrote numerous articles in which he insulted officials and members of the Church simply to reaffirm his ideas.

After leaving Paris he went to Germany where he took refuge in Lutheranism. They also expelled him from there over time.

The end of Giordano Bruno

Death at the stake by Giordano Bruno

Without a doubt, the worst mistake of his life was returning to Italy after leaving 15 years earlier. He was betrayed by the nobleman Giovanni Mocenigo who, under the pretext that Bruno was his teacher, invited him to his home and handed him over to the Venetian Inquisition.

When he faced trial, he set aside the arrogance and pride he had displayed for years and treated the jury with great respect. However, it was too late to turn back. The verdict was that he be publicly burned at the stake by the Inquisition. Despite his claims that his teachings were not religion but philosophy, he died in the flames in 1600.

As you can see, authentic disseminators of the truth have been cruelly murdered throughout history by the Church. I hope this information will help you learn more about Giordano Bruno's biography and his discoveries.
