You've probably been to the beach and watched the waves more than once. You've noticed that sometimes there's more sea foam than usual, and other times there isn't. Why is that? Sometimes, a combination of factors can cause the waves to barely produce any foam when they reach the shore, while other times there's so much foam it looks like washing machine water.

Sea foam and factors

Sea foam looks similar to the foam on beer. You've probably heard more than once that foamy water is dirty. This is a common misconception, and it's true. There aren't significant differences in the composition of the various seawaters we find in seas and oceans . Therefore, the foam has a different purpose.
These are air bubbles that appear when water is agitated by the wind. If there are strong waves due to high wind speeds, the water will likely have a lot of foam. Conversely, if we go to the beach and the water is calm, we'll only see some foam when the waves break on the shore. If you want to see this at home, simply stir a glass of water with a spoon and you'll see that the harder you stir, the more foam or bubbles you'll see. You won't see foam as such with tap water, but you will see bubbles from the agitation.
The lower the sea temperature, the longer the foam lasts. It's not a definitive indicator, as it depends on many other factors, but you can get a general idea of ​​the water's condition based on the amount of foam present. This is because gases don't escape into the atmosphere as readily or quickly as when the sun is warmer. Additionally, it can be helpful to observe wave formation to better understand its relationship to the foam.
Anecdote of a sparkling day

Because of the temperature we mentioned earlier, there's an anecdote from 2014, a fishing day in Galicia. The waves reached a height of about 10 meters, and the wind was blowing very strongly. The waves were so powerful, the sea rough, and the temperature so low that the amount of sea foam released covered several dozen kilometers.
Even though it was just foam, this event resulted in beautiful sunsets and a truly stunning spectacle. Other factors that form sea foam

Another factor contributing to sea foam is, obviously, organic pollution. Runoff laden with fertilizers, detergents, and other pollutants is perfect for generating a large amount of foam with much less agitation than natural foam. When water contaminated with these chemicals is stirred by waves , it usually creates large quantities of foam. The duration of this foam, again, depends on the ambient temperature, the water temperature, and the concentration of the pollutants at that moment. It's similar to pouring dish soap into a glass of water at home and stirring it with a spoon. Depending on the concentration of the dish soap, more or less foam will be produced.
On the other hand, the presence of various organic pollutants in water creates a proliferation of numerous microorganisms, making the water denser. As these microorganisms multiply, they release chemical byproducts of their metabolism. This causes the foam to persist for longer (by altering the water's surface tension). Furthermore, when these chemicals disrupt the water's natural resistance to gases escaping the liquid, it leads to inadequate oxygenation. Without sufficient oxygen in the water, many of the organisms that inhabit it are harmed and damaged.
All these conditions mean that, negatively, the marine ecosystem is completely damaged. This is how pollutants negatively affect water.

These conditions occur frequently in Australia. When this happens, the beaches remain covered in foam for quite some time. This foam is indeed caused by excess organic pollutants. If we compare the foam from Galicia with that of Australia, we can see that they look different. While the Galician foam appears more natural, the Australian foam resembles the foam you see when you watch the washing machine while it's doing laundry.
As a point of interest, there is a mineral in the world known as meerschaum. It gets its name from its white color and resemblance to foam. This mineral was once used to make smoking pipes. It is a variety of sepiolite and is quite useful when there is an oil spill at sea. This is due to its high absorbent properties, which allow it to retain a large portion of the spill and then be extracted. It's like using a sponge to absorb a spilled liquid on the ground. It also helps prevent the oil from settling on the seabed, where it can wreak havoc on the marine flora and fauna.
