Summer is progressing in Spain with an atypical weather event , marked by falling temperatures and persistent atmospheric instability across much of the country. Forecasts from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) indicate that this phenomenon will continue for the next few days, creating an unusual feeling for this time of year in many regions.
The cause of this situation is a low-pressure system that has been in place since Wednesday , which will continue to generate unsettled weather in the north and east of the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. These areas will experience overcast skies, frequent rainfall, and thunderstorms, often accompanied by hail, which can produce considerable amounts of rain in short periods.
Alert in several provinces due to adverse phenomena

According to the latest warnings from Aemet (the Spanish State Meteorological Agency), up to 16 provinces will remain under weather alerts for heavy rain, storms, high waves, and, in some cases, extreme temperatures. The provinces of Barcelona, Tarragona, Albacete, and Cuenca will remain at orange level due to the significant risk of precipitation and storms. Ibiza and Formentera will also be under this same alert due to the combination of high waves and intense storms.
In other areas such as Alicante, Castellón, Valencia, Murcia, Girona, Mallorca, AlmerÃa, and Granada, the warning primarily addresses rainfall and storms, while strong waves remain in effect in parts of the Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands. In the southwest of the peninsula, the focus is on Córdoba and Jaén, where high temperatures remain, and on the Canary Islands, where winds of up to 80 km/h will particularly affect Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, and Tenerife.
The regions most affected by the unsettled weather will be those along the Mediterranean coast and parts of the southeastern interior , such as eastern Castilla-La Mancha and eastern Andalusia. Intense, locally very heavy showers are expected in these areas, with the possibility of hail. The northern third of the Iberian Peninsula will also see rain, although it will be less significant there.
The rest of the Peninsula, however, will enjoy greater stability, with mostly cloudy to clear skies in the eastern part of the country and in the Alboran Mountains. The Canary Islands will experience cloudy skies in the north, with light localized rain, while the south will remain clear. Fog banks could also form in the north of the Peninsula, and some haze is expected in Melilla and the Balearic Islands.
Weather evolution towards the weekend
The low-pressure system will begin to withdraw on Friday, although unstable conditions will persist in the Mediterranean and the Balearic Islands during the early hours of the day, with a chance of residual showers that will tend to subside as the day progresses. The Cantabrian Sea may also experience light rain, while atmospheric stability will consolidate elsewhere.
From Saturday onwards, temperatures are expected to return to normal quickly , although the early morning hours will still be cooler than usual in several parts of the country. Maximum temperatures, however, will climb, with many areas of Extremadura and Andalusia reaching 38 degrees Celsius, and even exceeding 35 degrees Celsius in the northeast, central, and southern regions on Sunday. All indications suggest that this upward trend will continue into the beginning of next week, returning the country to a more summery climate.
In the Canary Islands, strong trade winds will persist over the next few days, bringing overcast skies and light rain to the north of the larger islands, while the south will continue to enjoy more sunshine. Towards the weekend, winds will tend to calm, with sea breezes prevailing and temperatures gradually rising.
Many parts of Spain are experiencing unusual weather for the summer season, with gray skies, persistent rain, storms, and even hail. Although temperatures will rise again between now and the weekend, this break from the extreme heat offers a welcome respite in the middle of the season and demonstrates the climatic variety that can occur in the country even in the hottest months of the year.
