Spain needs 300.000 electric cars in 2020 to fight climate change

  • The transport sector in Spain is responsible for 24% of greenhouse gas emissions.
  • 300.000 electric cars are needed by 2020 and an 80-90% reduction in emissions by 2050.
  • The investment needed to electrify transport ranges between €15.000 billion and €28.000 billion.
  • A significant increase in charging stations is required, from 1,700 to 80,000 by 2030.

The Spanish population is increasing a lot and rapidly. This would not be a very serious problem if it were to bet on renewable energies, but since it is not like that, the transport sector is responsible for 24% of greenhouse gas emissions in the countryTo better understand this impact, it is important to consider the Climate change and its relationship with transportation.

According to the report "A decarbonized transport model for Spain in 2050", prepared by Alberto Amores, partner in charge of Energy and Natural Resources at the Monitor Deloitte consultancy, a total of 300.000 electric cars are required by 2020.

In 2015, only 6500 electric cars circulated on Spanish roads, a figure that is equivalent to a market share of 0,2%, which is well below other European countries, such as Norway (23%) or the Netherlands (10%). ). For this reason, Alberto Amores said that »If Spain wants to reach the objectives of the European Union, it must reduce its emissions by between 80 and 90% compared to 1990». This highlights the urgent need for stop using diesel cars and also to continue the transition towards a more sustainable model.

To get it, between 6.000 and 11.000 million euros must be invested between now and 2030, with annual allocations of around 650 million for electric transport. This would allow the electrification of transport, which would help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address the increase in car rentals which also impacts pollution.

That money would be used for three types of incentives: to the purchase of the electric car (between 2000 and 6000 million euros), to the charging infrastructure (between 3000 and 5000 million euros), and the infrastructure for the development of the freight railway (between 10 and 17 billion euros), which would give a total of between 15 and 28 billion euros that should be invested apart from this year. In addition, it is important to take into account the environmental impact of rare earths in this context.

According to the author, there is still a lot of work to do. There are only 1700 charging posts in the entire Spanish territory, and it considers that there should be 4000 by 2020, 45.000 by 2025 and 80.000 by 2030.
