The cold snap that we are passing from Siberian origin is reaching its highest point in all of Spain. Regarding the temperature records, they are reaching especially lows that are not normal.
Not only the cold, but the rain and the wind are contributing to this cold wave bringing down the snow level to unexpected places. Let's look at the details of this Siberian cold snap.
Temperatures below zero
In some towns in Lleida, temperatures have become so low that they have reached -12 degrees. Other low temperatures stand out, such as the minimum in the Lleida-Bordeta station, where temperatures of -7,4 degrees have been recorded. The low temperature record of the day in Catalonia, however, has marked it Das, in La Cerdanya, with -21,6 degrees.
According to the State Meteorology Agency, the three provinces of Aragon, Ávila, Burgos, León, Segovia, Soria, Zamora, Girona, Lleida, Navarra, La Rioja, and Asturias will be on orange warning (important risk) due to low temperatures. They also have a warning for important risk in the Balearic Islands due to the east that will blow in Mallorca and Menorca generating coastal phenomena, as in Girona, in orange warning for this same reason, since strong wind is expected with very strong gusts in the Empordà.
Snow levels
The snow levels are so low that the snow has reached the Alicante coast and has covered municipalities such as Dénia and Xàbia in white, and has led to cutting off traffic on the Les Planes road, which connects both towns along the Montgó. Such a snowfall has not been recorded since the 80s.
Some warnings against bad weather
The municipalities of the localities with lower temperatures and more intense colder have recommended do not take your own vehicle if it is not necessary, as they can cause risks and problems in circulation. In the municipality of Dénia, classes in schools have been suspended.
Increase in electricity consumption
The cold wave in Spain has increased electricity consumption for heating. This has led to limits that have not been reached since 2012. In Catalonia, electricity consumption has increased by 7% due to the cold wave, as it has left almost the entire community with temperatures below zero degrees.
