One of the epochs that made up the Paleogene period of the Mesozoic Era is the Eocene . It was a period of significant geological and biological change. During this time, large mountain ranges formed as a result of the collision of major continental landmasses. These landmasses moved due to continental drift.

Although it seems contradictory to what we mentioned at the beginning, it is a time of separation, since the super continent Pangea, which until now had been the only land mass, was separating in almost its entirety. Large species of flora and fauna evolved and diversified, including birds and some marine mammals.

The total duration of this epoch is approximately 23 million years, divided into four ages. It was a time of change in which our planet underwent numerous geological transformations, the most striking being the breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea, which diversified to form the continents we know today. During this period, our planet experienced intense geological activity that resulted in the fragmentation of Pangaea. The northern part, known as Laurasia, fragmented extensively, giving rise to what are now Greenland, Europe, and North America. Each of these fragments of the Pangaea continent drifted due to continental drift until they reached their present positions.

A piece of Africa, known as the Indian subcontinent collided with the Asian continent. This is what is known today as the Arabian Peninsula. It is important that at the beginning of the Pliocene epoch there are some fragments of the Pangea that were still united. However, thanks to the effect of continental drift both pieces were separated. On the one hand, Antarctica was moving south and occupied the position it currently has. On the other hand, Australia shifted a bit north.

Regarding bodies of water, changes in ocean currents also occurred, even without the seas, due to the movement of these large landmasses. The Tethys Sea eventually disappeared as the African and Eurasian continents drew closer together. The opposite happened with the Atlantic Ocean. This ocean widened and expanded as North America drifted westward. The Pacific Ocean remained the deepest and largest ocean on the planet, as it is today.

The Eocene orogeny was a period of high geological activity, during which numerous mountain ranges were formed, many of which remain today. The collision of what is now India with the Asian continent, as previously mentioned, formed the Himalayas, the mountain range with the world's highest peaks . North America also experienced significant orogenic activity, resulting in the formation of the Appalachian Mountains.

Eocene Climate

Climatic conditions during the Pliocene epoch were fairly stable. At the beginning of this epoch, there was a slightly higher average temperature of approximately 7 to 8 degrees Celsius. This increase was only experienced initially and is known as the Paleocene Thermal Maximum. At the end of the Eocene, another event occurred that significantly altered the existing environmental conditions. This event is known as the Azolla.

The temperature increase at the beginning of the Pliocene occurred about 55 million years ago. During this period, there was almost no ice on the planet. Temperate forest ecosystems once existed in places where frozen areas exist today. Furthermore, it is believed that the increase in global temperatures was a result of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere due to high volcanic activity.

All these environmental conditions stabilized over time, and the climate became characterized by higher temperatures and low rainfall. However, these conditions eventually stabilized, and rainfall became abundant once again. As a result, the planet's climate became humid and warm, a trend that persisted for much of the Eocene.

In the mid-Eocene, a climatic event called the Azolla occurred. It involved a drop in temperatures as a result of a decrease in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations. These conditions led to the uncontrolled proliferation of a species of fern called Azolla folliculoides, hence the name of this event.

Flora and fauna

The environmental conditions of the planet allowed a good development of diverse species, both animals and plants. Throughout the Eocene epoch there was a great abundance and diversity of living beings thanks to the humid and warm climate.

Regarding flora, there were quite noticeable changes due to climatic conditions. Jungles and forests were abundant, and there was little evidence of polar regions due to the higher temperatures. The only ecosystems with any significant plant life were the desert ecosystems.

Regarding fauna, animal groups diversified greatly, especially birds and mammals. Birds enjoyed great success thanks to favorable environmental conditions, and some of these species were fierce predators of two groups of living beings.
