Today and with the existing evidence on climate change, there are still people who deny it. People who don't believe that climate change exists. Without going any further, we have the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who denies the existence of global climate change. He thinks it is an invention of the Chinese to gain competitiveness.
It is normal that in certain areas of the world this can be debated. Because according to climate change, our planet is warming. However, in many areas of the planet cold winters are being recorded, breaking records of low temperatures. If this is so, Does climate change really exist? Why are we wrong in denying its existence?
Evidence that makes it seem that climate change does not exist
97% of the scientific community affirms the existence of global climate change. To do this, although colder temperatures are observed in certain areas of the planet, however, it is wrong to use this evidence to deny the existence of climate change that affects the entire world.
The phenomenon of El Niño It is the main protagonist of all these climatic events that can confuse the entire world. It operates roughly in four-year cycles and is detected off the western coast of South America. The warmer temperatures of ocean currents affect trade winds around the world, which is why long winter storms can occur in regions like Europe. This is the explanation why we have such cold winters, not because climate change doesn't exist. It's important to recognize that there are other factors, such as difference between climate change and global warming that can influence our perceptions of the weather.
There is also other evidence that can lead to denying climate change. It is about of the ice growth that Antarctica has experienced in recent years. This is the complete opposite of what is happening in the Arctic, which is increasingly ice-bound. The explanation for this is that Antarctica, due to its position, is surrounded by strong winds and ocean currents that protect it. This way, it is more protected from the external effects of the climate. A phenomenon that can be seen in other regions of the world, such as the Germany's experience in the face of climate change.
Evidence of true climate change
Although these previous evidences can lead us to doubt about the existence of a global climate change, the reality is different. In recent years, planet Earth has experienced an anomalous increase in temperatures since systematic measurements began back in 1880.
2016 was the hottest year on record, with 2015 and 2014 taking second and third place respectively. According to him Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC), the average global temperature has increased by 0,85 degrees Celsius from 1880 to 2012. This has a direct impact on various areas, such as plant behavior and its adaptation to climate change.
So, despite the fact that there are cold spells in certain areas of the planet, we cannot just focus on that. We have to analyze the total trend of the temperatures of the entire planet. There are people who have studied the climatic changes that the Earth has had throughout history and they concern this fact that the current climate change it is nothing more than a natural fluctuation and that the human being has not intervened in it.
It is true that the Earth's climate has changed throughout history, but what leads to think that it is the human being the cause of this, is the speed with which this climate change is happening. That is, changes in the global climate throughout Earth's history have occurred through natural processes that have taken millions of years to occur. However, current global warming is occurring in a matter of 150 years. This is largely due to greenhouse gas emissions from our economic activities, and evidence of this lies in the multiple studies and knowledge we have about the characteristics of these gases. This phenomenon is also related to the adaptation of animal species to climate change
There is still more evidence of climate change that we will see in the next post.
