Neptune the coldest planet

Neptune is the outermost planet and the fourth in the gas giant line . Both Uranus and Neptune are known as ice giants because their temperatures are extremely low due to their distance from the Sun. Compared to the other planets, it is the fourth largest and the third most massive. The mass of this gas giant is equivalent to 17 times that of Earth.

It has an equatorial radius of 24.622 km and is located 4.498.252.900 km from the Sun. Unlike our planet, which takes about 24 hours to rotate on its axis (see Rotational Movements ), this ice giant takes only 16 hours. However, its orbit around the Sun, which defines the passage of years, becomes eternal. What for us is a year (the time it takes to orbit the Sun) is 164,8 years for Neptune.

It's called an ice giant because its average surface temperature is -220 degrees Celsius, compared to 15 degrees Celsius on Earth. Being larger than Earth, its surface gravity at the equator is 11 m/s².

When these planets are called gas giants it does not mean that they are composed entirely of gases. Neptune's core is made of molten rock with a mixture of water, liquid ammonia and methane gas. The characteristic blue color is not due to the presence of water on the surface, but its main atmospheric gas is methane.

If we analyze the magnetic field of this ice giant, we observe that it is tilted approximately 47 degrees with respect to the axis of rotation and displaced 13.500 km from its center. In this case, it is not the planet's tilt that causes this deviation, but rather the internal flows of matter and gases that deflect the electromagnetic field.

Contrary to what one might expect, Neptune, like Saturn, has rings. Proof of this was obtained by the Voyager II spacecraft when, in 1989, it managed to photograph the planet and approach its orbit. Furthermore, it not only has its characteristic rings, but also eight moons. This is something that challenges our assumptions, especially if we consider Earth's characteristics as normal. Ultimately, though, nothing is truly normal or predetermined, since it is we humans who define the categories.

Although it may seem like something out of a fantasy, Neptune has a ring system consisting of four rather narrow and thin rings with a faint color. This is what makes them invisible with a terrestrial telescope. The rings are formed from dust particles that have been torn away from the inner moons over the years. These fragments have accumulated due to gravity and have been ejected from their moons by impacts from smaller meteorites.

As can be seen, being a gas giant, its atmosphere is an important aspect to take into account. It can be seen if the surface of the planet is analyzed with the naked eye that it has spots similar to the storms present on Jupiter. However, these spots are not stable as on the other planet, but they form and disappear as time passes. This helps us to deduce the presence of storms of great intensity but not long.

It had the so-called Great Dark Spot, similar in size to Earth, but it disappeared in 1994. Later, another one formed. This gives us an idea of ​​the abundant storms that occur in its atmosphere. It should also be mentioned that the winds on Neptune have been considered the strongest of all the planets in the Solar System. Many of these winds blow in the opposite direction to the planet's rotation.

Interestingly, winds of up to 2.000 km/h were recorded in areas near that Great Dark Spot. A human being subjected to those winds would likely be swept away and crushed to death by the air pressure.

Photos of this planet in books and documents change over the years, as it doesn't remain the same. The spots that form and disappear alter the planet's appearance. As for temperatures, it has been recorded as low as -260 degrees Celsius , while on Earth, the lowest recorded temperature is -90 degrees Celsius.

The atmosphere is composed primarily of hydrogen and helium, with some nitrogen in between. Across the surface, we can find areas of water ice, methane ice, and ammonia ice (at such low temperatures, gases freeze). The clouds are not made of water vapor, as there is no water vapor at these temperatures. They are formed of frozen methane and change relatively rapidly.
