COP22 is functioning after the entry into force of the Paris Agreement. As every day I bring you the news about this historic agreement on climate change. The already president of the Spanish Government, Mariano Rajoy, He has traveled to Marrakech to attend the UN Framework Convention for the fight against Climate Change. This is his first appointment abroad since he was reinstated as chief executive.
The Paris Agreement on Climate Change was signed in the French capital in December last year, however Spain it has not yet ratified the Agreement. This has not been possible because Spain has not had a government for almost ten months. Despite this delay, Spain is expected to commit to the Agreement's goals in the context of its efforts to address climate change, as we have seen in other analyses of the situation.
Rajoy attends the meeting in which 197 countries are already participating. This is a legally binding and almost universal text, in which all countries that have ratified it commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to prevent average global temperatures from rising two degrees. Despite the current situation, it is crucial that Spain, as mentioned in other reports on the Paris Agreement, fulfill its commitment within the context of the Agreement, especially given the challenges we face as a nation in addressing climate change and its impacts.
We reiterate that the objective of the Paris Agreement is to address the global warmingAll countries must make voluntary contributions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which will be reviewed every five years. Furthermore, more developed countries will have to provide financial support to less developed countries to ensure equitable economic growth and opportunities for all countries that have ratified the Agreement. This aspect of financial support is essential to ensure that all countries can participate in the fight against climate change, a topic that has been widely discussed in previous meetings.
At the COP22 that takes place in Marrakech, the applications that were agreed in Paris are being advanced. In this way, the necessary mechanisms are put in place to make the Agreement work. Above all, what is being adjusted more and from the beginning are the development of information systems that, in a totally transparent way, allow to measure countries' efforts to reduce emissions. This transparency is vital so that each nation, including Spain, can be evaluated on its climate commitment and its effectiveness in implementing the Agreement.
The Spanish Government assures that it is committed to the success of this Agreement and that it will join the fight against climate change. Rajoy will be received at the climate summit by the King of Morocco, Mohammed VI and by the UN Secretary General.
