Characteristics of Uranus

Uranus is considered the seventh planet from the Sun in our solar system. Mercury is the closest, while Neptune is the farthest. Furthermore, Uranus is the third most massive planet (known as gas giants).
It has a diameter of 51.118 km and is located 20 times farther from the Sun than Earth. It was named after the Greek god Uranus. Unlike other rocky planets or those with chaotic structures, Uranus has a relatively uniform and simple surface. Its blue-green color is not due to the angle of the sun's rays; it is the result of its gaseous composition.
To see it from Earth, the night sky must be very dark, with the moon in its new phase (see the phases of the moon ). If these conditions are met, with binoculars we can easily find that small blue-green dot.
The scientist who discovered this planet was William Herschel, and he did so on March 13, 1781. At that time, many people were trying to learn more about our sky and discover what lay in outer space. To discover Uranus, Herschel used a telescope he built himself. When he identified the bluish-green dot in the sky, he reported that it was a comet. But after further testing, it was determined to be a planet.
It is ranked number six in the list of planets in the Solar System after Jupiter. Its orbit is quite large and it takes about 84 years to travel it than it would on Earth. That is, while our planet has circled the Sun 84 times, Uranus has made only one.
Composition:
It is about four times the size of our planet and has a density of only 1,29 grams per cubic centimeter. Its internal composition includes various types of rock and ice. The rocky core is quite abundant, and the most abundant gases in its atmosphere are hydrogen and helium. These two gases make up 15% of the planet's total mass. This is why it's called a gas giant. The tilt of its rotational axis is almost 90 degrees relative to its orbit. We recall that Earth's tilt is 23 degrees. Uranus also has rings like Saturn, although they are not as large. The axial tilt also affects the rings and its moons.
Due to its tilted axis, Uranus only has two seasons. For 42 years the sun illuminates one pole of the planet, and for the other 42 years, the sun illuminates the other pole. It has a ring system that is completely different from Saturn's and is also composed of dark matter (see What is Dark Matter? ). As is often the case in science, many of the most important discoveries happen by chance, perhaps while searching for something quite the opposite. These rings were discovered in 1985 when the Voyager 2 spacecraft was attempting to reach Neptune. It was then that, as it passed by, it spotted Uranus's rings.

It's normal for a planet with rings to have red rings. However, finding blue rings is quite rare. Its atmosphere and interior are composed of 85% hydrogen, 15% helium, and a small amount of methane. This composition gives it a greenish-blue color, similar to that of Earth.
There is a liquid ocean on this planet, although it has nothing to do with the one we have on Earth. Its atmosphere, composed of the aforementioned gases, liquefies as it descends until it envelops all the ice with water, ammonia and methane gas. We have said that the ocean is not like anything on Earth and it is because it is made up of water and ammonia. This makes it have a high electrical conductivity and is totally dangerous.
Unlike other gas giants such as Jupiter and Saturn, Uranus is predominantly composed of ice rather than gas due to its great distance from the sun. Temperatures are much lower, leading the scientific community to classify them as ice giants. Scientists have not been able to determine why its axis is so tilted, although it is thought that during its formation, it may have collided with another protoplanet or a large rock, resulting in this tilted axis.

It has 27 moons, some of which are better known than others. These moons are not large enough to have their own atmospheres. They were also discovered by the Voyager 2 probes. They have been named Titania and Oberon. Another moon, called Miranda, is composed of water ice and dust and has the tallest cliff in the entire Solar System. It rises to over 20 km (12 miles), which is 10 times larger than the Grand Canyon on Earth.
